Is it a theory of good or evil?
Translated from 日本語 • View original

In the management of a company, whether to do it based on the theory of good or evil is often debated. This time, I would like to think about how to improve my performance and make everyone happy.

Sexual Good and Evil Theories

Wikipedia says this.

The theory of sexual evil is an argument about human nature advocated by the Chinese thinker Xunzi around the 3rd century BC in opposition to Mencius's theory of sexual goodness. It comes from "Man's nature is evil, and his good is false" (from the "Xunzi" Sexual Evil Chapter). Evil here means "(human beings are weak in many ways)", not "evil = sin (crime or evil)" (it is possible that a human being who is a "weak being" ends his life without engaging in crime or evil). In addition, falsehood means "what a person does", not "falsehood = lie or fake" (as described later, it is considered to be a character that is acquired only through acquired effort and acquisition).

In general, there is a perception that "human beings do bad things for their own benefit if left alone", but Xunzi, who captured the theory of sexual evil, did not define it that way.

He defines "sexual evil" as "weak", not "evil".

Why companies cannot operate based solely on the theory of sexual goodness

Personally, I basically think that "humans have a conscience, and few people actively do bad things for their own benefit."

However, there are many crimes in the world, and there are many injustices in companies. Why?

There are two reasons for this.

Two Reasons Why Fraud Happens

One is "collective pressure". In particular, Japan has a culture of "respecting harmony with harmony", and it is psychologically difficult to deny what a group has taken for granted.

A while ago, there was Toshiba's embellished financial results. (It is said to be improper accounting, but the content is the embellished financial statement itself)

This is a case where the president said, "It's a challenge!", even if he did incorrect accounting with tacit understanding, it was allowed in the group mentality.

The same is true for organizations where power harassment and sexual harassment are rampant.

Also, since common sense changes with the times, there are many things that were recognized as not a problem in the past and are considered a problem in today's society. Overwork, which is now widely said to be black, was "natural to do it if it was a job" 30 years ago.

By the way, when I was a new graduate, there were people in Zara who worked overtime for 150 or 200 hours even in the same period, and that was not a particular problem. I get a lot of overtime pay and I don't have time to play, so I feel like I'm saving a lot of money.

In order to respond flexibly to such changes in the times, it will be necessary to create a culture that encourages people to break free from the curse of collective pressure and "say the right thing".

Another reason is "lack of discipline".

Discipline is something that is created based on values, and it is a little different from rules. Rules are something that must be followed, but discipline is like a guideline based on the values shared by everyone in the team.

It is dangerous to think that as long as you follow the rules, you can do anything.

If you run a team based on such ideas, moral hazard will occur. A good example of this is that if you apply for the name of entertainment expenses based on the rules, you can process expenses regardless of the substance.

Organizational management is carried out with the theory of goodness + weakness

So how do you move towards an organization where everyone feels good and performs at their best?

The idea of Colorkrew (hereinafter referred to as "Karakul") is to operate with the theory of sexual goodness + weakness. As mentioned above, we basically take the idea of sexual goodness.

However, sometimes there are opportunities and temptations to induce one's own interests, and there are times when things that are not right can be done as a matter of course due to group pressure.

According to the theory of sexual weakness, humans are weak, so they succumb to temptation and are swept away by pressure. However, if you make a lot of rules based on the idea of sexual evil, it will be difficult to do your activities.

Therefore, a way to bring self-discipline to each person is needed.

That is "openness".

Saving the Weak Spot with Openness

When you open up about everything, you will be able to act with self-discipline on what everyone thinks is "right". In a closed organization, it is established that "only you know this, so let's act with a little self-interest" is established, but in an open organization, the discipline works that everyone tries to act fairly.

Therefore, the idea of Karakul's organizational management is to minimize the rules of the sexual goodness theory and to be disciplined by being extremely open about risks based on sexual weakness.

Also, opening up all activities has the benefit of being a plus.

It means that "by activating communication about activities, values can be more deeply penetrated."

If you are a management who wants to run an organization with the theory of goodness, but are worried about how to create discipline, please try to adopt openness.
