The basis of coaching is to listen thoroughly to the members first. I think there are few people who disagree with this.
Acknowledge and affirm the existence of the other person.
Many managers may think that "compliments" are important as an extension of this.
"If you scold them, the young man will shrink, so praise and stretch them."
Sounds plausible.
Coach Nomura's Teachings
Mr. Nomura, a famous professional baseball manager who passed away last year, said the following about coaching.
There are three stages in the process of developing people: "ignoring", "praising", and "blaming".
Ignoring is a coaching method for a newcomer or a player who lacks ability, praise is a player who has shown potential, and criticism is a coaching method for a player who has grown up and is a key player.
Coach Nomura is a baseball person, so he applies it to baseball players.
What are the 3 stages of the coaching process for business people?
Is this what it looks like in the business world or in a company?
The level of "ignoring" is low, and when you are a junior, you "watch" while observing without much involvement.
"Praise" When the level rises a little more and a certain level of skill is gained, praise and improve.
"Criticism" When the level rises further and becomes a central person, give them awareness with harsh feedback so that they are convinced and do not stop growing.
The important thing is to determine the level of the members.
The first thing I wrote at the beginning of this blog, "If you scold them, young people will shrink" is actually not limited to Imadoki.
When you don't have the ability, even if you are told harsh things, it is difficult to start growing, which is a path that everyone took in the early stages of their careers. Someone recognizes you, gains confidence, and puts in more effort to build your career, which is a typical growth model in your youth.
Of course, there are people who have exceptionally strong mental strength and a desire to grow, and can continue to work hard no matter how hard they are beaten, but for many people, it is important to keep an eye on them first.
And when they start to grow, acknowledge and praise them.
The important thing is the future.
Even if you grow into a person who can play a central role, if you are proud that "this is enough", your growth will slow down in the future.
Once you reach that level, in order to further develop, it is the turn of "criticism" as Director Nomura says, or "harsh feedback" in the business world.
In this way, it is important for the coach to firmly determine what level the members are at and provide coaching that is appropriate for that phase.
Conversely, if you receive coaching. Understand that a coach who only gives you pleasant feedback is likely not to be a really good coach for you.
