OKR Methodology: Most Common Mistakes
Translated from Português (Brazil) • View original

The OKR methodology, which stands for Objectives & Key Results in Portuguese Objectives and Key Results, has as its main objective to be a type of GPS for your company. A GPS serves to show the path we must follow to reach the final destination, showing us the best route to follow.

And what does this have in common with the OKR methodology?

Briefly speaking, with this tool we know which activities should be prioritized, the changes that should be made and so we have the alignment of the teams so that everyone works to achieve a common goal and thus achieve the defined goals of your company.

Goalous and OKR, how can we help you?

To help you achieve OKRs, we created Goalous. It is a modern tool created especially for better management of strategic objectives and communication in the corporate world. Goalous is here to help you leverage your business, with a social network design and exclusivity for your company, the tool is easy to implement and one of the biggest benefits is to show employees that they are part of the company's success, engagement with the team is the key for everyone to feel part of the process.

OKR Implementation

As a first step, it is very important that the company has its objectives very well defined. The objectives in general must be engaging and inspiring, so employees feel challenged and motivated, making them strive and do their best to achieve the determined result. But always remembering that a challenging goal does not mean that it is unachievable. Then we can talk about Key Results, here we have the objective of measuring and analyzing the progress towards the objectives. They need to be quantitative and measurable, in addition to being defined by the team together. For an OKR to be achieved, it is necessary to ensure that the team is on the same page, that is, that everyone understands which steps must be followed. It is very important that everything is clear at this stage, we need attention and that it is monitored more closely in order to avoid confusion. If possible, hold regular meetings to discuss the subject and so that the team is recognized and congratulated for each phase achieved and completed. This step is extremely important to keep everyone motivated.

Common OKR Implementation Mistakes

When building an OKR within a company, we can face some impasses, causing errors and failures that can hinder and compromise the goals that have been set. Let's mention some of the most common mistakes: - Setting more OKRs than necessary: it may not seem like it, but this mistake is common. It is not difficult to avoid, but we have to remember that it is necessary to stay focused on what is really important. We dare say that in this topic, less is more; - Having non-measurable Key Results: this sometimes happens when we are anxious to see a result earlier than expected. The most important thing is that we have the result of something that will really make a difference in your business, we need to avoid setting a goal that cannot be closely monitored. Every Key Result needs to be measurable; - Create OKRs without transparency: what do we mean by this? The participation of the employees who will execute and put them into practice is indispensable. The tool must be used together, the team's opinion together with the leadership will define objectives and Key Results; - Not monitoring closely: when we do not hold regular meetings and meetings, it is complicated to monitor the progress of an OKR. It is necessary to establish a routine so that the progress of the results can be discussed and if it is necessary to make any changes or corrections; - Not analyzing deviations: as we said earlier, an OKR needs to be observed and closely monitored. Even though it is an agile methodology, we need to dedicate time to observe if any deviation is occurring. And if it is, check the cause and develop a correction plan; - Unsynchronized team: this mistake should be avoided from the beginning, even if each employee has their task to be done, it is necessary that everyone is synchronized and aligned. The manager must monitor this step closely to ensure that everyone is walking together. Want to know more information about OKR and how not to make these mistakes?
