Science of fun ~ (1) What is the identity of boring work~
Translated from 日本語 • View original

Colorkrew is working to keep the service of "Shigoto Fun" coming to life. Of course, we ourselves think about how to make our work and workplace more enjoyable every day.

In fact, in order to have fun, it is important to think from the other side and "eliminate boring things and pain".

This time, I would like to think about what the so-called "boring things" are that make work and workplace less fun from my past experience.

What is the identity of boring work?

It is likely that you may feel that your salary is low or that you are not evaluated, or that you are "boring". But that's not about the job itself or the workplace itself, so I'll exclude it here.

In my opinion, the identity of boring is "I am doing a job that does not feel meaning or significance" or "I am doing a job that is too easy. There are two of them.

What is a job that doesn't make sense?

No matter how good the salary you get, you don't want to do a job like "digging a hole and filling it again".

This "digging a hole and burying it" was a punishment for prisoners that existed in Europe a long time ago. It seems that some people went crazy with this punishment of digging holes. That's how painful it is.

The reason why this punishment is painful is probably because "I don't feel the meaning or significance".

I don't think there are many such extremes in modern society, but it seems that there are many people in the world who do not feel the meaning and significance of their work.

If you google surveys taken in various places in the past, there is a slight error, but about 30-40% of people seem to feel that they are doing a job that they do not find rewarding.

What is a job that is too easy?

And about another boring, "too easy job".

When you become a member of society, any job is difficult for you at first.

What I remember when I was a rookie was the difficulty of the job of answering phone calls to departments and taking over from seniors.

Most of the company names have never been heard of. There are many people with surnames like Nakamura, Sato, and Tanaka, who are not common names like me, and have surnames that they have never heard of.

If you don't take notes, you will forget them even if you can hear them, and if you are obsessed with taking notes, you will not be able to talk to the other person and you will not be able to ask for help.

I couldn't hear it so much that I often tried to intercede, saying, "Mr. xx, it's a call from a company that says it's somehow." "I don't know anything!" Laughter

Just because I can't hear you, even if I try to say, "Excuse me, can you give me your name again?", I can't hear it again. I can't ask the third time, so in the end, I have to say, "It's a company that manages something." lol But this time, there is an excuse that says, "I'm sorry, I asked you again, but I didn't understand," so my senior smiled bitterly.

I digressed a lot.

What I want to say is that any job is difficult at first.

Even if the job was just that difficult, once you get used to it a little, you will be able to do it. After a while, I was able to make the phone number perfect.

If you can't understand the business partner, you will check with your seniors later and remember it more and more.

I also devise notes when my seniors are away. We made a format in advance and made a large number of copies where we would write the date and if it was a common matter (for example, "Please call me back"), we could just put a checkmark on it.

Growth is about overcoming difficult tasks through ingenuity. It's fun when you're growing up. I don't think it really matters what level it is.

However, if you improve, the job that was difficult will become an "easy job".

Work has no limits in breadth and depth. If you are conscious, there are more difficult tasks for you. Are you able to work on more difficult tasks as well as simple tasks that you have cleared?

That's the checkpoint.

Is my current job boring? To determine

My recommendation is to regularly check if you are doing "meaningless work" or "easy work".

**Is there any meaning to work? **

In this regard, it is enough to judge whether or not you think so based on your own standards. Of course, if you change your perspective, you may feel meaning and significance, so let's try to look at it from a slightly more multifaceted perspective.

However, in the end, if you think you are "meaningless", the job is meaningless to you.

The problem is whether you are doing simple work. The difficulty of making this judgment is that even if it is the same job, the difficulty gradually decreases for me.

There are many cases where a job that was difficult two years ago is now an easy job.

Any environment can be in a state where the difficulty of work becomes low in the short term. Therefore, think about it in the medium term (2-3 years) and the long term (5-10 years).

When it is expected that "easy" will continue to be "easy" in the medium to long term, it is time to change the environment, including changing departments and changing jobs.

When you are doing a job that is difficult for you, it is recommended to use the "sense of growth" that you can always feel as an indicator.

How is your work?

Next time, I will think about the true nature of "workplace pain".
