What is Culture Deck? 3 reasons why Dredd HR decided to create Culture Deck

Hello, this is Ishihara, a dread personnel from Colorkrew. Colorkrew released the Culture Deck on December 1, 2021.

In this blog, I would like to touch on the background of the idea of creating a Culture Deck.

■What is a Culture Deck in the first place?

A Culture Deck is a document that specifically expresses the corporate philosophy, management philosophy, and behaviors expected of employees, and summarizes them comprehensively. Nowadays, more and more companies are releasing similar ones, but the most famous one is probably Netflix. Netflix's Culture Deck is also called "the most important document born of Silicon Valley."

■ Why did you decide to create a Culture Deck now?

There are three reasons why I felt that Colorkrew needed a Culture Deck right now:

(1) Decreased company-wide communication (2) Accelerated global hiring (3) Employees living in various geographies

I will explain them one by one.

(1) Decrease in company-wide communication Immediately after the coronavirus pandemic began, Colorkrew has been restricting people from coming to work quite strongly as a "remote work recommendation" since February 18, 2020. Immediately after we started working remotely, we saw the reduction of small talk as a very critical issue and implemented various measures.

The importance

of "small talk" in remote work

However, in the latest internal survey conducted in October 2021, nearly 60% of employees pointed out a lack of company-wide communication. (On the other hand, there were a lot of comments saying that they were satisfied with the communication within the members and teams they work with on a daily basis.) )

In order to prevent silos, trial and error will continue to increase communication opportunities across the company, but communication is × quantity and quality. In order to improve the quality of each communication, I thought it was important to be able to share the premise of working at Colorkrew (understanding and empathy for culture).

(2) Accelerating global recruitment At Colorkrew, which aims to achieve a successful global business with a global team, about half of the members who have recently joined the company are foreigners.

The background from which I grew up is completely different, and the high-context communication unique to Japanese people does not work. Rather than saying that it doesn't work, it's rude to the members who overcame the language barrier and joined the company. Therefore, we thought it was necessary to specifically talk about what Colorkrew thinks is important and what it doesn't think is important.

(3) Employees living in various regions In order to increase the competitiveness of recruitment during the coronavirus pandemic, which has led to remote work, we have increased the hiring of rural residents who are not premised on daily commuting.

This effort has been very effective in recruiting, with several promising members joining Colorkrew. However, the barriers to meeting and talking on a daily basis are still high, so I felt that it was necessary to properly express in writing the explanation of "Colorkrew-ness", which had been supplemented by detailed communication in order to integrate into the team.

In summary,

**・The lack of "company-wide communication" has become noticeable due to remote work. The frequency of communication will continue to improve, but at the same time, the quality needs to be improved. ** **・Diversity is progressing at an accelerated pace due to the active recruitment of foreigners and the recruitment of rural residents. It is necessary to clearly express what is "Colorkrew-ness" in writing. **

This was the driving force behind the creation of the Culture Deck.

■ Creating a Culture Deck

We have always been able to operate a flexible organization, and we have always valued "connecting through culture, not rules." To this end, we have maintained MVS (Mission, Vision, and Spirits) many times.

In fact, this time, at the same time as the release of Culture Deck, we renewed VISION again.

Colorkrew's MVS represents "the mindset and attitude that members who work at Colorkrew should value most." However, since all of them are deliberately expressed in short words and catchphrases, we thought it was necessary to clearly express "what does that mean?"

This is how this Culture Deck was born.

From the background of the production, I tried to write in as detailed and plain Japanese as possible. Of course, there is also an English version.

We hope that this sentence will help members understand and reaffirm MVS, and contribute to improving the quality of daily communication and, ultimately, improving team productivity.

We also hope that it will help those who are considering joining Colorkrew in the future to gain a unique cultural understanding.
