SXSW 2019, Experience Report #4
Translated from 日本語 • View original

Hello. This is Kazuya Hotta, an application engineer at ISAO. This is my third post on SXSW (South by Southwest). SXSW is a truly interesting and inspiring event.

In this article, Experience Bose AR-augmenting the world around you with sound, which exhibited and introduced VR and AR at SXSW

I would like to touch on it.

It's titled "The Current State of VR and AR as Seen at SXSW" .

The whole venue was a little dark.

About the Products on Display

Overall, I got the impression that the products on display this time were mainly content competitions. With VR products such as Oculus becoming more widespread, I have the impression that companies are focusing on what kind of content they create on their platforms rather than new devices.

The main contents are as follows:

Games

When you think of VR, I think the one that immediately comes to mind is games. At this SXSW, of course, many games using VR were introduced.

For example,

ECLIPSE

The main character who was in trouble with the spaceship responds to the trouble. While the experiencer actually walks around, he or she repeatedly grabs and places objects in VR to move forward towards a solution.

You can feel the atmosphere from the poster.

It is actually playing.

MARS HOME PLANET

It's the same space object as ECLIPSE, but while ECLIPSE actually walks around and experiences it, this is VR that you experience while sitting. By actually moving the chair, you can feel the feeling of actually riding a spaceship not only visually but also from the whole body.

Documentaries

Next, it seems that VR is being used for documentary content. It seems that the goal is to create an experience that moves the hearts of those who experience it more than ever before.

HOME AFTER WAR

You can experience a house that was destroyed by the war. The exhibition used not only VR devices but also sets that looked like actual broken houses.

It is a set with a heavy atmosphere, and you can experience it in this set.

METRO VEINTE

It seems that you can experience life in a wheelchair. In the exhibition, I experienced it while sitting in an actual wheelchair.

Miscellaneous

Bose AR

As Bose's AR, a camera-type device was on display. You can hear music by making a sound from the foot of the glasses. As a result, earphones and headphones (?) You can have a conversation even while wearing it. In addition to listening to music, you can also interact with smartphone apps thanks to the angle sensor installed on the device. Double tap on the device can be a decision. And you can choose by putting on the device and bending your neck.

It is currently a camera-type device, but in the future, it will be a device that can be worn on personal glasses.

Conclusion

I wanted to experience all the VR and AR introduced this time, but unfortunately it was so popular that I couldn't experience it all. It may be different from the actual content, so please contact us if it is different. Overall, as mentioned at the beginning, VR seems to have begun to compete in content. We are focusing on what kind of value we can provide to the experiencer and how far we can draw them into the world.

I would like to continue to have high expectations for the future.
