Hello, this is Fukase, a muscle engineer from ISAO. This time, I came to Austin from Dallas, where I am on a business trip, to join the SXSW inspection team. In this article, I would like to write about the SXSW WorkShop (workshop) that I participated in. For an explanation of SXSW, please take a look at Hotta's article in detail.
What is SXSW WorkShop?
Workshops revolve around specific topics and skills, providing practical, in-depth, and advanced level information that allows SXSW registrants to gain expertise in specific areas of interest. Depending on the specific session, the workshop lasts between 1 and 3 hours.
By the way, here is a list of WorkShop in 2019. Among them, some of the WorkShops in the Interactive category, which is in the Development and Design areas, look like this.
- Accelerated Introduction to Machine Learning
- The Arsenal of a Blockchain Developer
- Be the Blockchain: A Game Experience for Newcomers
- Build a Movie Recommendation Engine in Python
- Build Your Own AR Prototype
- Chalk Talk: Developing for VR, AR and MR
- Conversational Design Sprint
- Create Your Own Bitcoin with Black Girls CODE!
- Dancing to Algorithms: How to Algorave
- Data Science for Designers
- Design & Build Disruptive Products for the Future
- Designing APIs for Growth
- Digital Accessibility Master Class
- Equitable Design for Persons with Disabilities
- Health Check: Diagnose Your Design Team's Culture
- How to Contribute to Ansible - Step by Step
- Integrating Google Firebase with a React Application
- Jump Start Your Career in Infrastructure Engineering!

- Python for Asteroids, Using NASA's Open API
Technically, there were many trendy fields such as opportunity learning and AR/VR/MR. Therefore, WordShop requires advance reservations, and it was only at the last minute that I found out that I could participate in SXSW, so it seems that there were some WorkShops that were already fully booked. We recommend that you check your schedule as soon as you decide to participate in SXSW. Among them, the WorkShop I participated in was "Let's Prototype a Voice-Activated Interface" and "Jump Start Your Career in Infrastructure Engineering! There are two of them.
Let’s Prototype a Voice-Activated Interface
In the context that prototyping is a good opportunity to learn about new frameworks and platforms, this session is to prototype a web application with a Voice Interface. We will use a framework called Javascript Vue.js and a library called HTML5 Voice Control called artyom.js to create a prototype.

Prototypes are the fastest way to test and validate ideas. This includes using tools such as paper prototyping, InVision, and taking videos.

If you find a framework or platform that you haven't used yet, try using it in your prototyping. I personally agreed with this point. I personally felt that when I found a new tool or library, the learning period tended to be the goal, so I felt that it was meaningful to conduct such technical verification in prototyping.

Functionally, it feels like the items in the slides above were implemented in order.
The URL of the Github repository can be found here. If you are interested, please take a look.
Jump Start Your Career in Infrastructure Engineering!
In the second half, we did a WorkShop to deploy applications by linking kubernetes and GitLab to find out what kind of skills and knowledge are needed to become engineers who will be active in the infrastructure field. I will not go into more detail about Kubernetes here.

The participants have various occupations and levels, and it is a place like the United States. As an aside, all the instructors in the session were black women, so we had a unique cheerful atmosphere from beginning to end. First, the careers of infrastructure engineers were categorized and explained about the skills required for each.

Among them, it seems that the following basic skills are often required. I was surprised that perhaps because DevOps is popular, Git skills and automation knowledge are required as a matter of course.

There is no mention here, but I also had knowledge about MBA and Agile in terms of skills that would be nice to have. I felt once again that not only as an engineer, but also as a businessman, skills are required in Japan as well.

You have learned how to use the features of GitLab's pipelines and CI to work with kubernetes. I was surprised that the integration has progressed so far because I don't have many opportunities to touch the infrastructure personally. I felt that I had to study. Here is the repository I used for that time.
Conclusion
What did you think? バリエーションに富んだ、様々なプログラムがあるのがSXSWならではないかと思います。 Like the Pitch session, there were blockchain programs, AR/VR/MR, Voice UI-related programs, etc., which seemed to be popular this year. If you are planning to participate next year or later, we hope you will expand your knowledge, skills, and connections.
